“I would have my friends have a barbecue in our garden,” she enthuses about her dream day off. ‘I have a whole food set up at the end of the garden with a pizza oven, amazing grill that can do barbecue [meat] – I would be completely indulging them! ‘For me, being able to have people, house them and feed them is my greatest pleasure,’ he smiles. ‘But then [I’d want them] everybody fuck, you know, eight o’clock.

Hosting with more is a key part of Jessie’s identity, especially to the legions of Table Manners fans so devoted that they will come by the thousands this year to see Jessie and Lennie on tour.

But it turns out she’s paying attention to the basics of her nutrition so she, and her growing family, can feel and function their best.

1. You can enjoy food and still maintain balance

Jessie says of her relationship with food: ‘I love it so much. And I have always adored him. Which [means] I’ve always had to be mindful of how much I’m eating because I love food so much I could definitely have more.

Nor is it constructive. I’m working, I’m using my brain, I’m using my body in rehearsals and it’s tiring and exhausting so I’m going to eat something good while I’m at it!

So now the balance seems to enjoy indulgent meals, especially when recorded Table Manners (“like, a pavlova on Monday”) but making up for it with nutritionally sound fare on the day.

“I’m sensible about what I eat,” she shares, “because I know it makes me feel better.”

2. It pays to be careful with sugar

  • Research by Graze and the University of Glasgow found that only 3% of adults and just 4% of parents know the Recommended Daily Limit (RDL) for total and added sugar intake.
  • Added (or ‘free’) sugar is any sugar added to foods or beverages during processing or preparation, including seemingly ‘healthy’ items like store-bought smoothies.
  • Natural sugars are those found in dairy products and whole fruits and vegetables.
  • Snack manufacturers only label the total amount of sugar in their products and don’t share how much additional sugar you’re eating as a percentage of your RDL, so it’s easy to overeat.

    Jessie is emphatic that this is not about painting the sweet stuff as a villain to be exiled from our diets, far from it.

    ‘It’s not about preaching,’ he says. “It’s just about being informed and being able to make informed decisions.”

    3. Your mom will forever I know better though

    Famously combative (they once had a full row in front of Sir Paul McCartney…and his podcast microphones), the subject of sugar is a bone of contention between Jessie and Lennie.

    “My mom and I disagree about sugar and what I give my kids — she thinks I’m incredibly strict,” Jessie shares.

    Ah, generational differences in parenting coming to a head around food – a story as old as time.

    “It’s probably because I used to have a huge cupboard of sugary cookies and snacks.” All my friends loved it, but that’s not how my husband [PT Sam Burrows] I want to do things,’ adds Jessie.

    ‘My mother would call [our approach] bored. But I call it living a healthy lifestyle that I enjoy.’

    4. Eggs are life

    As much as possible, pop star life permitting, Jessie likes to eat as a family. And the morning meal is the main event.

    ‘Breakfast is our best meal together, it’s always eggs. My 10 month old doesn’t like eggs and he stresses me out! But okay, we’ll work on it,” she laughs.

    As for how Jessie likes her eggs in the morning? That would be with pot toast. ‘Or I’ll make a beautiful scramble with lots of vegetables, and then coffee.’

    5. Salads don’t have to be boring

    This famous foodie really (whisper it) loves a salad, for lunch or dinner.

    “We’re going to make it a little more exciting than, you know, protein and vegetables,” she says. ‘So, I’ll add lime juice or Tabasco, feta cheese, herbs, spices, all of that.’

    ‘I was pleased with myself that I brought [a homemade] lunch yesterday. But today I’ll probably order a Pret or Leon salad, and that’s fine too.’

    6. For long-lasting energy, spinning beats coffee

    “Exercise lifts my spirits throughout the day,” says Jessie, who does strength and rehabilitation physical therapy sessions with her husband, along with cycling sessions in their Peloton.

    ‘Yesterday, I slept poorly the night before and hadn’t exercised in the morning, so I felt sluggish and sleepy all day. So you look for cafes [for an energy hit] and that’s kind of pointless.

    So, Jessie has learned to do it when she can. “Even if it’s just 20 minutes on the bike to feel the endorphins before I go to rehearsals.”

    7. Smart women pack snacks.

    Jessie loves protein shakes for easy-to-swallow sustenance, especially when rehearsing or performing her high-energy shows. Beautifull It’s your favorite brand.
