Fashion may have its new star, but the world will have to wait a few years until Kaia Aragon finishes school – primary school, that is.
Nine-year-old Kaia Aragon has gone viral on TikTok for her stunning original fashion designs. Her mother, Tonya, has a TikTok account of her daughter’s original creations, @middle.mom, with 582.9,000 subscribers and 22.6 million likes. Among these fans? Famous adult fashion icons, including Vera Wang, who sent the young talent a handwritten note.
Wang commented on one of Tonya’s TikTok videos and then sent Kaia a handwritten note, along with a purple backpack. “So excited to see that you are already pursuing your dream of becoming a fashion designer! Congratulations and good luck,” Wang signed off.
Kaia told The Post that she had been drawing “for a while” and had just started sewing in November 2021. Her first project was a cat bed. But she quickly moved on to making her own outfits.
“I love that depending on what you’re wearing, it can make you feel confident and brave,” the Colorado youngster told the Post.
Kaia’s career started last Christmas when she was given a model. Right away, she grabbed a piece of fabric, walked into her room and pinned it to the form, sewed it together, and came out in her own design about an hour later.
“It kind of blew my mind,” Tonya, Kaia’s mother, said. “I thought the dress form was for decoration. I didn’t know she was actually going to use it.
But talent does not come from nowhere. Tonya said her daughter has always had a knack for style.
“Since she was young enough to choose her own clothes, she was always very meticulous about the items she would choose,” the proud mom said. “She always went beyond accessories and mixed and matched things that didn’t make sense to me but would make sense once she put them on.”
“And she didn’t get that from me,” Tonya said, prompting laughter from Kaia. “It’s unique to Kaia.”
Kaia still creates most of her designs on her own, but she has a great team supporting her and working with her: The Aragon family has taken in 14 children and are still “very, very close” with 10 of them. “I consider all 10 of them organic,” Kaia made sure to clarify.
She dreams of starting her own fashion business with her siblings and friends.
“My friends and my big sister would be the designers because that’s what we want to do, and then my brother said he would do the hair for our company,” she explained.
Requests have already poured in from friends asking for outfits and strangers placing orders for wedding and prom dresses. But for now, Kaia still prefers to design for herself.
While Tonya enjoys seeing her daughter’s skills grow, she doesn’t want to lock her daughter into the fashion business anytime soon, she said.
“She does this because it makes her happy, and as soon as you make it a business, it’s something she has to do. She’s only 9, she’s in third grade, she should definitely be given the chance to change her mind if it’s not something she wants to do forever.
“She’s at a point in her life where she should be exploring a million other things that she loves,” she added.
And although she receives a lot of encouragement, Kaia does not let herself go to the head.
“Right now, I’m just doing this for fun,” the little fashionista said.
